Fairchild has already tested their flying mailcar and cargo plane which they designated the PACKET (C-82) which is destined to revolutionize air mail service all over the world. Powered by two Pratt & Whitney R-2800C twin-row radial aircooled engines, with a top rating of 2100 hp, the PACKET cruises at 200 mph with a maximum range of 4000 miles. It utilizes Hamilton Standard full-feathering hydromatic three blade propellers. The fuselage is built of aluminum alloy throughout, with fabric covered control surfaces. Equipped with a tricycle landing gear which is fully retractable, the PACKET can take off in 800 ft. of space loaded with 42,000 Ibs. (gross wt.) which enables it to use small airports. The capacity of the cargo compartment is 2916 cu. ft., and its interior length is 38 ft. A 17° ramp may be carried in the plane so that trucks or automobiles may be driven into the fuselage. The horizontal tail surfaces are 14 ft. above the ground which permit the most modern vans and trailers to back in underneath. The PACKET will maintain a ceiling of 8000 ft. on one of its 2100 hp engines, in cases of emergency. Canada Car & Foundry Co., Ltd. has built an airfoil fuselage into their new Burnelli cargo plane designated the CBY-3. Of all-metal construction, "with a wing span of 86 ft. and overall length of 54 ft., this 27,000 lb. transport is expected to carry a disposable load of from 10,000 to 12,000 Ibs. In addition to facilities for 24 passengers and crew, it provides 700 cu. ft. of cargo space. The CBY-3 is equipped with dual undercarriage wheels and duplicate hydraulic systems in the event of tire or brake failure while taking off with heavy loads. Maximum speed of the CBY-3 at 10,000 ft. is 215 mph, and it cruises at 173 mph, with a rate of climb of 1050 fpm. Capable of cruising for 7 hrs., with a range of 1200 miles, the CBY-3 can carry a maximum payload of 7365 Ibs. It is powered by two Pratt & Whitney engines rated at 1200 hp each. Unusual design of this aircraft offers definite advantages and it is interesting to note that an estimated 30 percent lift is derived from the airfoil fuselage. The P-82 Twin Mustang, built by North American Aviation is a twin-fuselage two-place fighter monoplane powered by two Packard built 12-cylinder V-1650 Rolls Royce engines each generating 2200 hp, attaining 475 mph, with a maximum range of over 3000 miles. Each fuselage accommodates a pilot, and are joined by the wing and horizontal stabilizer. A unique feature of the twin-fuselage is the four-wheel landing gear arrangement. Rudder pedals in either cockpit can be readily disconnected during flight and moved forward out of the way, allowing more space for comfort of the crew member not controlling the airplane. Normal gross weight with full tanks, normal crew, ammunition, and four 1000 lb. bombs is 20,000 Ibs., and weight empty, 14,350 Ibs. Wing span of the P-82 is 51 ft. 3 in., length 38 ft. 3 in., height 13 ft. 8 in., and a total wing area, 408 sq. ft. It is armed with .50 caliber machine guns, four bomb racks, 1000 Ibs. each, and five rocket-launching racks. |
