On The Line Lockheed's new CONSTELLATION is already transporting the largest loads of passengers, mail, and express ever hauled by any commercial plane. The CONSTELLATION is of all-metal, low-wing construction, and is a high-performance, all-range passenger transport. Powered by 4-Wright Cyclone engines developing 2500 hp each, driving Hamilton Standard 3-bladed propellers, the CONSTELLATION has a top speed of 350 mph fully loaded, and cruises easily at 300 mph, with the very low landing speed of 80 mph, and a range of 5000 miles. Its wing span is 123 ft. with an overall length of 95 ft. I in., and is capable of carrying 100,000 Ibs. The newly detachable Speed pack, is an external cargo carrier with a capacity of 4 tons used for short and medium ranges. Ease of maintenance and repair of the CONSTELLATION are facilitated greatly by full accessibility to all functional parts. TUDOR II, a product of A. V. Roe & Co., England. uses 4-Rolls Royce Merlin engines of 1770 hp each, enabling the craft to cruise at 250 mph, and to attain a maximum speed of 325 mph at 20,500 ft. It has a gross weight of 34 tons, can carry 9 tons of cargo, day seating capacity 40 persons, convertible to 20-berth night express, or 60 passenger airliner. Maximum range 4100 miles. The TUDOR II has a wing span of 120 ft., length 105 ft. 7 in., and a fuselage 11 ft. in diameter, with a useful floor area of 570 sq. ft. Complete dining facilities are included, served from a fully equipped kitchen. Lounge deck and bar are also available for comfort of passengers. The AVRO TUDOR II is being manufactured in both England and Canada and also in Melbourne, Australia at a Government-owned plant. Lockheed's P-80 SHOOTING STAR has two rocketassist units attached to the underside of the fuselage which give an upward thrust to the plane on take-off. In addition to the 4000 Ibs. of thrust developed by the General Electric I-40 jet turbine engine, the two Jato rocket-assist units develop a total of 2000 Ibs. of thrust for 12 to 15 seconds. In a lightly loaded SHOOTING STAR with the Jato units, take-off was made in 1185 ft., about 40 per cent of the normal take-off run. The Jato units. made by Aerojet Engineering Co .. Cal.. may be jettisoned at any time after they are fired, and cartridges may be refilled even after jettisoning, operated by a trigger on the control stick. |
