NAZI AIRCRAFT UNEARTHED A Report by Birt Darling A TEAM of aeronautical experts of the Combined Intelligence Objectives Sub-Committee of the Intelligence Division of Supreme Headquarters, Allied Expeditionary Force, has just released a report revealing that the German Air Force was planning a host of new aircraft during the time when Allied bombers were destroying Nazi armed might. This information, held on the "secret" list up to the present time, disclosed that eleven hitherto unknown types of aircraft were in the stage of development and that some of them were little short of being sensational. All of them, from fighters to helicopters, as it turned out, involve new features which Allied experts are now studying closely. Acting upon unconfirmed information, the team of aviation experts made its way to Montaudran Airdrome, France, soon after the reconquest. They had heard that the Germans were developing a large helicopter designed to carry heavy loads over short hauls. The 'copter reportedly would be able to hop tanks or heavy trucks over rivers. The tip proved correct. They didn't find completed craft, but they found French aircraft experts willing to provide details of the helicopter, which was to have been out this year and known as the Focke-Achgelis FA-284. A side-by-side twin-rotor type, it would have been powered by two BMW- 801 engines rated at 2000 hp each. A system of clutches was planned to enable either engine to drive one or both rotors, which would have been synchronized. |
